Irrigation FAQ

Common questions about sprinkler systems, service, and cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas does JHL Irrigation serve?

We serve Chester County from our West Chester office (West Chester, Exton, Malvern, Paoli, Downingtown, Glen Mills, Chadds Ford, Thorndale) and Delaware County from our Newtown Square office (Newtown Square, Broomall, Media, Wayne, Edgmont).

How much does a sprinkler system cost?

Residential sprinkler systems typically run $4,000–$12,000+ depending on property size, zone count, and site conditions. We provide a free, fixed estimate after a walkthrough.

What sprinkler brands do you install?

We standardize on Rain Bird and Hunter equipment, and install Rachio, Rain Bird, and Hunter smart controllers — reliable, serviceable platforms with widely-stocked parts.

When should I winterize my sprinkler system?

Schedule a compressed-air blowout from October to mid-November, before the first sustained hard freeze. Draining alone won't protect the low spots and heads.

When should I start my system in spring?

Once the hard-freeze risk passes — typically April in our area. We re-pressurize slowly to avoid water-hammer damage and check every zone.

Do you repair systems you didn't install?

Yes. We service all major brands and system types regardless of who originally installed them.

How much water can a smart controller save?

Most homeowners see 30–50% lower irrigation water use versus a fixed timer, because a smart controller skips cycles after rain and tunes runtimes to local weather.

Do you handle permits and backflow prevention?

Yes. Every installation includes a code-compliant backflow preventer, the required permit, and PA 811 utility locating before any excavation.

What's the difference between drip and sprinklers?

Sprinklers deliver overhead spray for turf; drip delivers slow water at the root zone for beds, borders, and trees with up to 50% less water. Many systems run both on one controller.

How long does a sprinkler installation take?

Most residential systems are installed in one to two days, including trenching, head placement, controller wiring, backflow setup, and a full zone test.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes, JHL Irrigation & Sprinklers is licensed and insured, and we coordinate PA 811 utility locating and backflow permitting on every install.
